Most existing management education focuses on functional specialization, which is sector-agnostic. This shifts the burden of industry-specific training on employers. Such training mostly occurs on-the-job and reactionary to specific circumstances. Often, the society at large bears the expense through instances of mis-selling or poor customer service. This is especially true for knowledge-intensive industries such as financial services. Whether it is the retired army officer who is being sold a deferred pension plan or a housewife who runs pillar to post to get a health claim settled for her husband, the root-cause of their agony is lack of qualified talent.
